British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is set to outline his vision to make the UK a global leader in artificial intelligence (AI). In a speech scheduled for Monday, he plans to announce the creation of special zones for data centers. He also outlined initiatives to encourage more students to pursue technology-related degrees.
Starmer aims to make AI the core of his strategy for economic growth. The government estimates that fully adopting the technology could boost productivity by 1.5% annually, adding £47 billion ($57 billion) to the economy each year over the next decade.
The government has committed to implementing all 50 recommendations from the “AI Opportunities Action Plan,” a report by venture capitalist Matt Clifford. Key measures include streamlining planning permissions and energy connections for data centers. The first facility is to be built in Culham, Oxfordshire, which is home to the UK Atomic Energy Authority.
In a statement, Starmer emphasized that the plan is designed to make Britain a leader in AI, promising more jobs, investment, and economic opportunities for citizens.
Globally, countries are racing to establish themselves as AI powerhouses while navigating the need for responsible regulation. According to Stanford University, the UK ranks as the third-largest AI market, following the U.S. and China, based on metrics such as investment and patents.
